The Monte Sano problem
Wood smoke is the local contaminant. Every fire puts fine soot and unburned creosote into the room, and both are oily rather than dry, so they bond to wool instead of resting on it. Vacuuming does almost nothing. The effect is a slow, even darkening that owners rarely notice because it happens to the whole rug at the same rate, plus a smell that reasserts itself on humid days. Smoke residue needs a solvent-side pre-treatment before washing or it simply spreads.
