A fold sets a hard line into the foundation, and that line becomes a hinge that flexes underfoot every single day afterwards. Left long enough the warp fibres at the crease fatigue and part, and a split opens along a dead straight line. It is fixable early with controlled damp and tension, and becomes a reweave once the threads have actually broken.
