What Five Points is built from

The Five Points problem
Red clay abrasion at the entries. Alabama clay is not ordinary soil — the particles are plate-shaped iron-oxide minerals, hard, and they cut. With a short walk from car to door there is nowhere for grit to drop, so it lands in the first four feet of rug and stays. What looks like a worn traffic lane is usually not wear from feet at all; it is thousands of clay platelets sawing through wool every time somebody crosses. Once it has cut the pile, cleaning recovers the colour but not the nap.
